Understanding Meningitis: What Every Parent Needs to Know As featured in The Telegraph

In an article for The Telegraph, I contributed to a crucial conversation around meningitis—particularly its symptoms, risks, and how parents can recognise early warning signs in children. While many associate meningitis with a rare or distant threat, the truth is that it remains a serious health risk, especially for young children whose immune systems are still developing.
I spoke about how meningitis, though not highly contagious, can be transmitted by asymptomatic carriers through droplets. What determines whether the infection takes hold is the individual's immune resilience. In other words, just being around someone carrying the bacteria doesn’t mean you’ll get ill—but if your immunity is low, the risk increases. That nuance is often overlooked, and it’s something I’ve found many parents are unaware of.
One of the most important things I highlighted was the urgency of recognising symptoms and trusting your instincts. Meningitis symptoms can escalate quickly and may not appear all at once. A rash that doesn’t fade under pressure is a well-known sign, but I stressed that parents shouldn’t wait for a rash or drowsiness before seeking help. Fever, vomiting, light sensitivity, stiffness, and unusual lethargy are also red flags. In babies, swelling in the soft spot on their head (the fontanelle) may also appear.
I encouraged families to stay informed and proactive: ensure children receive recommended vaccinations, practice good hygiene habits at home, and know when to escalate concerns. If your child becomes ill and symptoms are progressing rapidly, don’t hesitate—contact NHS 111, your GP, or in more serious cases, dial 999. I always remind parents that no one knows your child better than you do, and if something feels wrong, speak up and advocate for proper evaluation.
The article also explored the difference between viral and bacterial meningitis, and why urgent medical tests are needed to determine which is present. While viral forms can often be managed at home, bacterial meningitis requires hospital treatment and can become life-threatening if not addressed quickly.
For those seeking a reliable breakdown of the causes, symptoms, and treatments for meningitis, the full piece is a valuable read.
